Ayr shrugs off penalties, upends Tavistock, 5-2

The Ayr Centennials, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Tavistock Braves' power play opportunities and emerged with a 5-2 victory.

Ayr was sparked by Jordan Pettitt, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Pettitt scored on the power play 1:03 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Ayr. Eric Hackborn picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:12 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The the Centennials penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 18 minors and two majors for 56 minutes in penalty time. Ayr had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Centennials managed to hold Tavistock's power play largely in check, allowing only one goal while on the disadvantage.

Ayr additionally got points from Brett Gibson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Ayr also got a goal from Adam Fisher as well. In addition, Ayr received assists from Jake Whibbs, Andrew Richard, Brendan Schaefer, and Jack Taylor, who contributed one a piece.

The Braves forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 14 minors and two majors for 58 minutes in penalty time. Tavistock surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Braves were led by Jeremy Munro, who tallied one goal. Munro scored 5:23 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tavistock. Mackenzie Kalbfleisch assisted on the tally. Branden Taylor also scored for Tavistock. Other players who recorded assists for Tavistock were Matthew Lupton, Nick Quehl, and Angus Rowland AP, who each chipped in one.

Mitch Figueirdo recorded 25 saves for Ayr. The Centennials registered two goals on 14 power play opportunities. Team's Mac Kemp, Jordan Kerr, and Pettitt were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Trevor Bloch made 21 saves for Tavistock on 26 shots. For the Braves, Sean Leslie and Tyson Zehr AP were ejected from the contest.
