Rio Grande Valley downs Wichita Falls, 4-1

Kay Yeager Coliseum    Fri, Nov 01, 2013

Evan Schmidbauer had two points to lead the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to a 4-1 victory over the Wichita Falls Wildcats.

The Rio Grande Valley penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled four minors and four majors for 38 minutes in penalty time. The Killer Bees had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. Rio Grande Valley put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Wichita Falls to score on any of its four power plays. The Killer Bees' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Marcus Ericsson also scored for Rio Grande Valley. In addition, Rio Grande Valley received assists from Cam Ashley, who had one.

The Wildcats racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with four minors and four majors for 28 minutes in penalty time. Wichita Falls surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. The Wildcats excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Wichita Falls was led by Josh Haverstrom, who scored the team's only goal. Haverstrom scored short handed 19:18 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Rio Grande Valley. A kneeing call on Max Reisinger put the Wildcats on the penalty kill.

Olli Kalkaja made 21 saves for Rio Grande Valley on 22 shots. Wichita Falls' David Zevnik stopped 19 shots out of the 22 that he faced.
