Wichita Falls vanquishes Corpus Christi in shootout, 2-1 (3-2 SO)

AmericanBank Center    Fri, Oct 25, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wichita Falls Wildcats defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays in a shootout 2-1 (3-2 SO).

The two teams needed 16 turns to complete the shootout. Corpus Christi got shootout goals from Joe Costello and Martin Hojbjerg. Wichita Falls also got shootout goals from Josh Haverstrom and Rudy Junda.

The Wildcats came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Wichita Falls fell behind 1-0 after a power play goal by the IceRays' Maurin Bouvet at 15:23 in the first period. The Wildcats knotted things up at 1-1 on a goal by Jordan Jancze at 16:59 in the first period.

Corpus Christi was stymied by Wichita Falls netminder David Zevnik, who stopped 38 shots during the victory. The solid play of Zevnik will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.81.

The 40 shots that the Wildcats put on net surpassed Wichita Falls' average of 29.3 shots per game this season. The Wildcats could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game.

Other players who recorded assists for Wichita Falls were Matt Koch, who had one.

The IceRays' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Wichita Falls power plays. Corpus Christi was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 22 penalty minutes. The IceRays forced Wichita Falls goalie Zevnik to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

In addition, Corpus Christi received assists from Tony Roisum and Jason Lem, who contributed one a piece.
