Rio Grande Valley uses shootout to best Wichita Falls, 3-2 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees defeated the Wichita Falls Wildcats in a shootout 3-2 (2-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. In addition to the clincher, Rio Grande Valley got a shootout goal from Aleksi Luhtalampi.

The Killer Bees saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Rio Grande Valley made the score 2-0 on a power play goal by Tyler Bruneteau at 2:15 in the third period. Wichita Falls evened things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by Josh Haverstrom at 18:26 in the third period.

Bruneteau was all over the ice for the Killer Bees, as he grabbed two goals in the win.

Rio Grande Valley stifled the Wildcats' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The defense for the Killer Bees played an important role offensively, racking up 11 shots on goal.

In addition, Rio Grande Valley received assists from Ian Janco and Ben Greiner, who each chipped in one.

Wichita Falls was helped by Rudy Junda, who tallied one goal. Junda scored 16:44 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Rio Grande Valley. Colin Staub assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Wichita Falls were Andrew Kerr, who had one.

Olli Kalkaja made 27 saves for Rio Grande Valley on 29 shots. The Killer Bees incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Chase Munroe recorded 21 saves for the Wildcats. Wichita Falls incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
