Wichita Falls uses shootout to best Rio Grande Valley, 2-1 (2-1 SO)

Kay Yeager Coliseum    Tue, Oct 15, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wichita Falls Wildcats defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in a shootout 2-1 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout. Rio Grande Valley's shootout goal was scored by Ben Greiner. In addition to the clincher, Wichita Falls got a shootout goal from Rudy Junda.

The Wildcats came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Wichita Falls trailed 1-0 after a goal by the Killer Bees' Austin Hoff at 12:25 in the second period. The Wildcats knotted things up at 1-1 on a goal by Max Reisinger at nine seconds in the third period.

Wichita Falls stifled Rio Grande Valley's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Other players who recorded assists for Wichita Falls were Colin Staub and Tyler Ledford, who each chipped in one.

The Killer Bees put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Wildcats to score on any of their three power plays.

In addition, Rio Grande Valley received assists from Greiner and Anthony Croston, who contributed one a piece.

David Zevnik made 22 saves for Wichita Falls on 23 shots. The Wildcats incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Olli Kalkaja rejected 27 shots on goal for Rio Grande Valley. The Killer Bees incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
