Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Austin Bruins defeated the Brookings Blizzard in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO). The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Brookings got a shootout goal from John Nitchen. Austin also got a shootout goal from Austin Nelson.The Bruins came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Austin was down 2-0 after a goal by the Blizzard's Russ Jordan at 2:18 in the second period. The Bruins knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Jay Dickman at 16:12 in the second period. Austin was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and four majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The Bruins surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Drew Anderson also scored for Austin. In addition, Austin received assists from Nelson, who had one. Brookings forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and four majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The Blizzard had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. Brookings excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Blizzard relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Brandon Parker, Evan Hesse and Jared Goudreau took 15 of the team's 27 shots. Other players who recorded assists for Brookings were Conor Andrle, Beau Michaud, and Trey Olson, who contributed one a piece. Nicholas Lehr rejected 25 shots on goal for Austin. Drew Weigman recorded 27 saves for Brookings. The Blizzard registered one goal on four power play opportunities. |
