Kenai River uses shootout to best Corpus Christi, 1-0 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays in a shootout 1-0 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured nine attempts between both teams.

Kenai River forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. The Brown Bears surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Kenai River stifled Corpus Christi's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Brown Bears could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Kenai River puts an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game. The Brown Bears was steadier on the defensive front than they have been for much of this season. Kenai River gives up 2.6 goals on average per game.

The the IceRays penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Corpus Christi had been spending in the box. The IceRays put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Brown Bears to score on any of their six power plays. Corpus Christi was held below its usual level of production. The IceRays average 2.5 goals per game.

Corpus Christi was led by Griffin Leach, who took four shots.

Zach Quinn recorded 22 saves for Kenai River. The IceRays' Ben Myers stopped 22 shots out of the 22 that he faced. Corpus Christi registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
