Rio Grande Valley uses shootout to best Soo, 2-1 (4-3 SO)

Schwan SR-2    Sat, Sep 21, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees defeated the Soo Eagles in a shootout 2-1 (4-3 SO).

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Soo's shootout goals were scored by Dante Suffredini, Denver Pierce, and Ryan Urso. Rio Grande Valley's other shootout goals were scored by Marcus Ericsson, Rob Marsanico, and Anthony Croston.

The Killer Bees stifled the Eagles' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. With 31 shots on target during the contest, Rio Grande Valley exceeded the 25.8 shots it averages per game this year.

The Killer Bees were led by Will Clark, who finished with one goal. Clark scored 14:25 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Rio Grande Valley.

Soo's offense was clicking better than usual and put 25 shots on goal during the game, better than the 20.5 shots per game it averages.

The Eagles were led by Jacob McDowell, who scored the team's only goal. McDowell scored 17:08 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Urso provided the assist.

Rio Grande Valley's Olli Kalkaja stopped 24 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Killer Bees incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Colin Brennan made 29 saves for Soo on 30 shots. The Eagles incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
