Coulee Region vanquishes Rio Grande Valley in shootout, 4-3 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Coulee Region Chill defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in a shootout 4-3 (3-2 SO).

The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams. Rio Grande Valley's shootout goals were scored by Aleksi Luhtalampi and Ben Greiner. Coulee Region's other shootout goals were scored by Sean Kalbak and Richard Zehnal.

The Chill were led by Blake Kelley, who grabbed one goal. Kelley scored on the power play 6:08 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Coulee Region had gained a power play chance when Chris Jones was whistled for slashing. Dunk Abbott assisted on the tally.

In the losing effort, the Killer Bees were paced by Greiner, who had two goals. Greiner scored the first of his two goals at 6:15 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Marcus Ericsson picked up the assist. Greiner's next tally made the score 4-3 Rio Grande Valley with 18 seconds left in the third period.

The Chill put 27 shots on net during the contest, more than the 22.0 they average per game. Coulee Region had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

Coulee Region additionally got points from Mac Jansen, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Adam Lovick also scored for Coulee Region. In addition, Coulee Region received assists from Matthew Montemurro, Brogran Rafferty, and Zehnal, who contributed one a piece.

The Rio Grande Valley penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Killer Bees had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Rio Grande Valley relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Greiner, Tyler Bruneteau and Nathan Flynn took 16 of the team's 30 shots.

Rio Grande Valley also got a goal from Rob Marsanico as well. Other players who recorded assists for Rio Grande Valley were Ian Janco, who had one and Luhtalampi, who had two.

Blake Cates recorded 27 saves for the Chill. Coulee Region ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Olli Kalkaja made 23 saves for the Killer Bees on 26 shots. Rio Grande Valley registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
