Chicago beats Wisconsin 7-5 after comeback scare

The Wisconsin Whalers tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Chicago Junior Bulldogs would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 7-5.

Chicago took a 7-4 lead during the third period, only to have Wisconsin storm back on a Nolan Kepler goal 19:52 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Matt Kostopoulos had two goals and one assist to lead the Junior Bulldogs. Kostopoulos scored the first of his two goals at 5:04 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Chicago. Toms Taurins picked up the assist. Kostopoulos' next tally made the score 6-4 Chicago with 57 seconds left in the third period. Ryan Maksimovic provided the assist.

Chicago put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Whalers to score on any of their seven power plays. The Junior Bulldogs found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Chicago averages 4.3 goals per contest. The Junior Bulldogs could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

Chicago additionally got points from Taurins, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Chicago also got a goal from Vince Bartkowiak as well. In addition, Chicago received assists from Luke Morin, who had three and Trevor Foley, Kyle Pierce, and Dan Marotz, who contributed one a piece.

Wisconsin's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Chicago power plays. The Whalers' offense rang up 36 shots on Chicago's net. Wisconsin was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 38 penalty minutes.

Wisconsin also got points from Jason Hoehn, who also had one goal and one assist and Tim Tarvis, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Wisconsin also had goals scored by Connor Morgan and Zack Johnson, who each put in one. More assists for Wisconsin came via D.J. Mussey and Alex Anderson, who each chipped in one and Ryan Martin and Mitch Riese, who contributed two a piece.

The Junior Bulldogs' Michael Paku stopped 31 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Connor Fissel recorded 16 saves for the Whalers.
