Cincinnati squeaks by Chicago, 7-5

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Cincinnati Swords escaped with a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Junior Bulldogs.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Luke McCammant at 2:52 of the third period.

Andrew Bond was all over the ice for Cincinnati, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Bond scored the first of his two goals at 9:03 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Cincinnati. Henry Smith provided the assist. Bond's next tally made the score 6-4 Cincinnati with 16:27 left in the third period. Smith picked up the assist.

The Swords forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and three majors for 39 minutes in penalty time. Cincinnati had been averaging 14.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Swords' offense rang up 31 shots on Chicago's net. Cincinnati surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Swords average 3.6 goals per contest. Cincinnati had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

Cincinnati additionally got points from Aaron Storch, who also had one goal and one assist and McCammant, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Cincinnati included RJ Marshall, Thomas Clayton, and Tanner Bennet, who scored one goal each. In addition, Cincinnati received assists from Hunter Schneider and Robert Gentile, who contributed one a piece and Devin Fracassi and Emil Sundstrom, who each chipped in two.

The the Junior Bulldogs penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Chicago had been spending in the box. The Junior Bulldogs kept the Swords' goalie busy throughout the game, and Alec Rounds made 27 saves on 32 shots.

Chicago was helped by Christopher Wachal, who registered one goal. Wachal scored on the power play 14:10 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Chicago. The Junior Bulldogs had gotten the advantage when Cincinnati's Jessie Fracassi was sent off for grabbing face mask. Jeremy Szczurek assisted on the tally. Chicago also had goals scored by Trevor Foley, Kyle Pierce, Matt Kostopoulos, and John Godfrey, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Chicago were Matt Blaszkiewicz, who had two and Toms Taurins, Ryan Maksimovic, Matthew Mullally, and Jarret Walt, who contributed one a piece.

The Swords ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Fracassi was ejected from the game. Michael Paku rejected 24 shots on goal for Chicago. The Junior Bulldogs registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
