Metro vanquishes Toledo in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Lakeland Rink1    Sun, Jan 05, 2014

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Metro Jets defeated the Toledo Cherokee in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout.

Metro overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Jets fell behind 2-1 after a goal by Toledo's Dominic Antonelli at 5:05 in the second period. Metro tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Alex Holm at 8:16 in the second period.

The Jets stifled the Cherokee's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Toledo was unable to stop Metro from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jets eventually piled up 42 shots on goal.

Metro was helped by Nathan Phillips, who had one goal. Phillips scored 3:59 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Cooper McLean picked up the assist. In addition, Metro received assists from Kyle Shreve, Zach Mac Kay, and Matt Dempsey, who each chipped in one.

The Cherokee excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

David Bogart also scored for Toledo. Other players who recorded assists for Toledo were Kyler Omey, who had one and Zachary Armstrong, who had two.

Trevor Kalinowski rejected 14 shots on goal for the Jets. Metro ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. Toledo's Clay Horvath stopped 39 shots out of the 41 that he faced. The Cherokee totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 0-for-5 on the power play.
