Minnesota vanquishes Chicago in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Minnesota Flying Aces defeated the Chicago Junior Bulldogs in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Chicago's shootout goal was scored by Matt Blaszkiewicz. Minnesota's other shootout goal was scored by Eric Cruickshank.

The Flying Aces got the win with help from a great game by Cruickshank, who had two goals and two assists. Cruickshank scored the first of his two goals at 19:53 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Minnesota. Anthony Martinez assisted on the tally. Cruickshank's next tally made the score 5-4 Minnesota with 17:01 left in overtime.

The Junior Bulldogs' power play was ineffective against Minnesota's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Flying Aces forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. Minnesota had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Flying Aces kept Chicago's goalie busy throughout the game, and Michael Krch made 26 saves on 31 shots. Minnesota outdid its season average for goals scored. The Flying Aces average 2.4 goals per game.

Minnesota additionally got points from Martinez, who also tallied two goals and one assist and Jake Mullendore, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. More assists for Minnesota came via Blake Olinyk, Blake Anderson, and AJ Gullickson, who each chipped in one.

The Junior Bulldogs forced Minnesota goalie Mike Stumpf to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. Chicago's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

The Junior Bulldogs were helped by Matt Kostopoulos, who tallied one goal. Kostopoulos scored 16:43 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Minnesota. Luke Morin provided the assist. Chicago also got points from Blaszkiewicz, who also registered one goal and one assist. Chicago also had goals scored by Kyle Pierce and Andrew Fattore, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Chicago were Tyler Dalton, who had two and Jarret Walt and Zac Edwards, who contributed one a piece.

Stumpf recorded 43 saves for the Flying Aces. Minnesota registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For the Flying Aces, Justin Nielsen was ejected from the game. Chicago incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
