Minnesota uses shootout to best Cincinnati, 6-5 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Minnesota Flying Aces defeated the Cincinnati Swords in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO).

The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Minnesota's other shootout goal was scored by Jake Mullendore.

The Flying Aces came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Minnesota trailed 4-2 after a goal by Cincinnati's Thomas Clayton at 4:14 in the second period. The Flying Aces knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Henry Smith at 3:53 in the third period.

Minnesota's penalty kill excelled, as the Flying Aces gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

Minnesota made the Swords' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, racking up 31 shots and forcing 25 saves. Joe Sheppard made 10 stops and Artie Haase made 15. The Flying Aces outdid their season average for goals scored. Minnesota has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Flying Aces were helped by Eric Cruickshank, who finished with two goals and one assist. Cruickshank scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 17:32 into the second period to make the score 4-4. Minnesota had gained a power play chance when Brenden Williams was whistled for high sticking. AJ Gullickson provided the assist. Cruickshank's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Minnesota with 19:23 left in the third period. Gullickson picked up the assist. Minnesota also got points from Mullendore, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Minnesota also had goals scored by Vladimir Marchenko and Eric Rogorzenski, who each put in one. More assists for Minnesota came via Blake Anderson, who had one and Anthony Martinez, who had two.

Cincinnati was led by Nick Haase, who grabbed two goals. Haase scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:42 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Swords had gotten the advantage when the Flying Aces' Mullendore was sent off for tripping. Nikita Korotkov assisted on the tally. Haase's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 10:02 left in the first period. RJ Marshall picked up the assist. Cincinnati additionally got points from Andrew Bond, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Smith, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Cincinnati were Ryan Sete, who had two and Devin Fracassi and Robert Gentile, who each chipped in one.

Mike Stumpf rejected 24 shots on goal for Minnesota. The Flying Aces incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Cincinnati incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
