Peoria vanquishes Wisconsin in shootout, 4-3 (4-3 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Peoria Mustangs defeated the Wisconsin Whalers in a shootout 4-3 (4-3 SO).

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Wisconsin got shootout goals from Zack Johnson, Easton Halbert, and Kaleb Morley. In addition to the clincher, Peoria got shootout goals from Sam Turner, Nathan Chasteen, and Brennan Anderson.

Anderson had a great game for the Mustangs, netting two goals. Anderson's tallies came short handed at 13:47 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Peoria and 18:14 into the third to make the score 3-3.

Peoria's penalty kill excelled, as the Mustangs gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Peoria stifled the Whalers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Mustangs kept Wisconsin's goalie busy throughout the game, and David Volkmann made 43 saves on 47 shots.

Peoria additionally got points from Andrew Scofield, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Peoria came via Chasteen and Austin Wisely, who contributed one a piece.

The Whalers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Wisconsin forced Peoria goalie Marc Hayton to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

The Whalers were helped by Morley, who registered one goal. Morley scored 5:54 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Johnson provided the assist. Wisconsin also got a goal from Mitch Riese as well. In addition, Wisconsin received assists from D.J. Mussey and Ryan Martin, who each chipped in one.

Hayton recorded 31 saves for the Mustangs. Peoria incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Wisconsin incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
