Sugar Land holds on for 5-4 win against Topeka

The Sugar Land Imperials survived a determined comeback attempt by the Topeka Capitals on the way to a 5-4 win.

A goal by Luke Simon put Sugar Land up 5-3 in the third period, but Topeka pulled to within one on Yu Kikosaka's tally 13:20 into the third period.

Avik Bordak and Joe Bordak provided the spark for the Imperials, combining for three goals and two assists. Bordak racked up two goals and Bordak also added one goal and two assists.

Sugar Land managed to stay out of the box for the most part, totaling 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Imperials finished with less than their 34.0 minutes average penalties per game. Sugar Land kept the Capitals' goalie busy throughout the game, and Mike McElroy made 31 saves on 36 shots.

Sugar Land also got points from Austin Givens, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Simon, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Bordak, who also registered one goal and two assists. In addition, Sugar Land received assists from Tucker Spooner, who had two.

Topeka racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and two majors for 70 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 43.0 minutes per game the Capitals had been spending in the box. Topeka excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Imperials were unable to stop the Capitals from sending pucks towards the net, and Topeka eventually piled up 46 shots on goal.

Topeka additionally got points from Nick Manney, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Topeka also got a goal from Brandon Hawkins as well. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Nick Rizzo, Kole Hudson, and Jaydn Munnelly, who contributed one a piece.

Colton Anderson rejected 42 shots on goal for Sugar Land. The Capitals registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Topeka ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Georgy Ostapchuk was ejected from the game.
