Flint uses shootout to best Toledo, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Flint Junior Generals defeated the Toledo Cherokee in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Toledo's shootout goal was scored by Zachary Armstrong. Flint also got a shootout goal from Zach Koonce.

The Cherokee's power play was ineffective against the Junior Generals' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Flint's offense operated below it season average. The Junior Generals put an average of 5.4 pucks into the net per game. Flint forced Toledo goalie Aaron Callan to work between the pipes, taking 54 shots.

The Junior Generals were helped by Reno de Hondt, who registered one goal. De Hondt scored 19:32 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Flint. Mark McGee picked up the assist. Conner McGovern also scored for Flint. In addition, Flint received assists from Nicholas Gnagni, Justin Fisher, and Ryan Burr, who each chipped in one.

The Cherokee made Junior Generals' goalies to work between the pipes, launching 32 shots and forcing 30 saves. Anders Franke made 26 stops and Nathan Klebe made four.

Toledo was helped by Dominic Antonelli, who tallied one goal. Antonelli scored on the power play 2:00 into the third period to make the score 2-2. The Cherokee earned a power play opportunity when Andrew Bellant was put in the box for roughing. Noah Szenderski provided the assist. Toledo additionally got points from Szenderski, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Toledo came via Will Bennett, Brody Duncan, and Brett Podgorski, who contributed one a piece.

Flint incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Toledo's Callan stopped 51 shots out of the 53 that he faced. The Cherokee incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
