Flint uses shootout to best Pittsburgh, 4-3 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Flint Junior Generals defeated the Pittsburgh Vengeance in a shootout 4-3 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Pittsburgh's shootout goals were scored by Lukas Friberger and Tom Diffendal. Flint also got shootout goals from Cam Jorgensen and Conor Durgan.

The Junior Generals forced the Vengeance goalie Jason Kumpfmiller to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Flint could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Junior Generals were led by Brett Leppek, who had two goals. Leppek scored the first of his two goals at 10:52 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Leppek's next tally made the score 3-2 Flint with 3:56 left in the second period. Flint had gotten the advantage when Pittsburgh's Thomas Leistner was sent off for cross checking. Austin Fletcher picked up the assist. Flint also got a goal from Zach Koonce as well. In addition, Flint received assists from Justin Fisher, who had one.

The Junior Generals were unable to stop the Vengeance from sending pucks towards the net, and Pittsburgh eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. The Vengeance had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Pittsburgh was led by Michael Straub, who racked up two goals. Straub scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 19:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Pittsburgh. The Vengeance had taken the advantage when Flint's Trevor Benaglio got sent off for slashing. Joseph Randazzo assisted on the tally. Straub's next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Pittsburgh with 10:38 left in the second period. Pittsburgh earned a power play opportunity when Nicholas Gnagni was put in the box for roughing. Kevin Kenny picked up the assist. Nicholas Santiago also scored for Pittsburgh. More assists for Pittsburgh came via Oskar Thorsen, who had two.

Anders Franke recorded 32 saves for the Junior Generals. Flint registered two goals on five power play opportunities. The Vengeance's Kumpfmiller stopped 36 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Pittsburgh incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
