Schmidt nets hat trick, leads Alexandria to 8-5 win over Breezy Point

Tom Schmidt lifted the Alexandria Blizzard to an 8-5 victory with a hat trick against the Breezy Point North Stars.

Schmidt's first goal came 3:32 into the second period. He then added goals at 14:59 into the second and at 9:50 into the third.

Alexandria forced Breezy Point goalie Joey Bergquist to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The Blizzard bested their season scoring average. Alexandria averages 5.0 goals per game.

Alexandria additionally got points from Aaron Ryback, who also finished with two goals and one assist. Alexandria also got a goal from Tre Kautzman as well. In addition, Alexandria received assists from Mick Dhein, who had two, Nate Mettenburg, who had three, and Trent Olson, Bryce Mitzel, Danny Pelzer, Jody Randall, and Anthony Martinez, who each chipped in one.

The North Stars racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. Breezy Point surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. The North Stars made Blizzard's netminders to work without much rest, ripping 43 shots and forcing 38 saves. Patrick Anderson made 19 stops and Evan Bisek made 19. Breezy Point surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the North Stars average 2.7 goals per contest. Breezy Point's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

The North Stars were led by Blake Neumann, who registered one goal and one assist. Neumann scored 12:55 into the second period to make the score 5-3 Alexandria. Mitch Pierson provided the assist. Breezy Point also got points from Russel Barone, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Scott Schroeder also scored for Breezy Point. Other players who recorded assists for Breezy Point were Benji Smieja and Chris Hjorth, who contributed one a piece.

The Blizzard totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Bergquist recorded 37 saves for Breezy Point. The North Stars registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
