Cleveland vanquishes Flint in shootout, 7-6 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks defeated the Flint Junior Generals in a shootout 7-6 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured 17 attempts between both teams.

Cleveland overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Jr. Lumberjacks trailed 5-2 after a power play goal by Flint's Nicholas Gnagni at 17:06 in the second period. Cleveland tied things up at 6-6 on a goal by Gnagni at 19:57 in the third period.

The Jr. Lumberjacks was paced on offense by Brendan Logan and Jared Johnson, who combined for six points. Logan racked up two goals and one assist and Johnson also notched two goals and one assist.

Cleveland kept the Junior Generals' goalie busy throughout the game, and Anders Franke made 29 saves on 36 shots. The Jr. Lumberjacks' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Cleveland averages 3.9 goals per contest. The Jr. Lumberjacks cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring three goals on four chances.

Cleveland also got points from Mike Palasics, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Johnson, who also registered two goals and one assist, and Tyler Pritt, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Cleveland were Alex Buban, Stefan Horgas, John Michael Barlow, and Eli Lynn, who contributed one a piece and Avery Huibregtse and Tyler Stockwell, who each chipped in two.

Flint's offense rang up 55 shots on Cleveland's net. The Junior Generals' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Flint averages 1.9 goal allowed per game.

The Junior Generals were helped by Zach Koonce, who tallied two goals. Koonce scored the first of his two goals at 12:33 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Justin Fisher assisted on the tally. Koonce's next tally made the score 3-1 Flint with 12:13 left in the second period. Flint earned a power play opportunity when Palasics was put in the box for slashing. Chris Skordilis picked up the assist. Flint additionally got points from Austin Fletcher, who also tallied one goal and three assists, Gnagni, who also registered two goals and one assist, and Conor Durgan, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Flint received assists from Trevor Benaglio, who had one and Brett Leppek, who had two.

Tyler Jansen made 49 saves for the Jr. Lumberjacks on 55 shots. Cleveland ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. The Junior Generals totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 3-for-6 on the power play.
