Caledonia squeaks by Port Colborne, 4-3Vale Center Fri, Aug 16, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The game between the Caledonia Corvairs and the Port Colborne Pirates was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Caledonia emerged with a 4-3 win. The Corvairs gained the winning advantage on a goal by E Kerrns 15:32 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. Kerrns was all over the ice for Caledonia, as he tallied two goals in the win. The Corvairs pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 32 penalty minutes. Caledonia forced Pirates' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, racking up 40 shots and forcing 36 saves. Mitch Topliffe made 17 stops and Mitch Knight made 19. The Corvairs stifled Port Colborne's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. A McPhail also scored for Caledonia. More assists for Caledonia came via S Gourlay, B Dykstra, C Fontana, and J Brown, who each chipped in one. The Pirates made Caledonia's netminders to work without much rest, totaling 31 shots and forcing 28 saves. Allen made nine stops and Bridges made 19. Port Colborne put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Corvairs to score on any of their six power plays. The Pirates could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 44 minutes in penalties during the game. Port Colborne was led by Charlie Izaguirre, who racked up two goals. Izaguirre scored the first of his two goals at 16:57 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ryall Ledyard provided the assist. Izaguirre's next tally made the score 3-2 Port Colborne with 5:35 left in the second period. Evan Copobianco picked up the assist. Port Colborne also got a goal from Matt Majchrak as well. In addition, Port Colborne received assists from Matt Ceko and John Melcher, who contributed one a piece. For Caledonia, McPhail was ejected from the game. The Pirates registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. Port Colborne ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Josh Gordon was ejected from the game.
