Welland beats Thorold 3-2 after comeback scare

The Thorold Blackhawks tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Welland Jr. Canadians would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

Welland took a 3-1 lead during the third period, only to have Thorold storm back on a Owen Sobchak goal 17:05 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Jack Fitzgerald, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Fitzgerald scored 1:08 into the third period to make the score Welland. Matthew Mateljan picked up the assist.

Others who scored for Welland included Eric Cerino and Adam Barron, who each put in one. In addition, Welland received assists from Adam Mataya, who had two and Damien Lalonde and Brayden Stortz, who each chipped in one.

The Blackhawks stifled Welland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Thorold was held below its usual level of production. The Blackhawks put an average of 5.0 pucks into the net per game. Thorold forced the Jr. Canadians goalie Jeffery Heartwell to work between the pipes, taking 52 shots.

The Blackhawks were helped by Kevin Millejours, who registered one goal. Millejours scored 8:39 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Joe Mitchell assisted on the tally. Thorold also got points from Sobchak, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Thorold came via Ryan Sarris, who had one.

Jeffery Heartwell made 50 saves for Welland on 52 shots. The Jr. Canadians avoided the penalty box for the entire game and scored zero goals off of four power plays. Ian Shorthouse rejected 26 shots on goal for Thorold. The Blackhawks incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and had no power play opportunities.
