Wichita uses shootout to best Arizona, 5-4 (2-1 SO)Tims Toyota Center Wed, Mar 26, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Wichita Thunder and the Arizona Sundogs both failed to score in overtime, but Wichita won the game 5-4 (2-1 SO) after Matt Robinson's deciding goal in the shootout. The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams. Arizona got a shootout goal from David Rutherford. The Thunder also got a shootout goal from Matt Summers.Dustin Donaghy was all over the ice for Wichita, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Donaghy found the back of the net on the power play 17:54 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and again while 11:35 into the third to make the score 3-2 Wichita. By firing 46 shots on goal, the Thunder exceeded the 22.2 shots they average per game this year. Wichita also had goals scored by Jason Wilson and Summers, who each put in one. In addition, Wichita received assists from Mike Wilson, who had two and Erick Lizon and Tomas Klempa, who each chipped in one. The Sundogs kept Wichita's goalie busy throughout the game, and Taylor Nelson made 35 saves on 39 shots. Arizona was led by Brandon Coccimiglio, who tallied two goals and two assists. Coccimiglio scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:43 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Arizona. The Sundogs had taken the advantage when the Thunder's Wilson got sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. Shawn Limpright picked up the assist. Coccimiglio's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 4:35 left in the third period. Rutherford assisted on the tally. Arizona also got a goal from Kevin Baker as well. Other players who recorded assists for Arizona were Matt McCready and Justin Pender, who contributed one each. Wichita incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Adam Brown rejected 41 shots on goal for Arizona. The Sundogs incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
