Arizona holds on for 5-4 win against Wichita

The Arizona Sundogs survived a determined comeback attempt by the Wichita Thunder on the way to a 5-4 win.

Arizona took a 5-2 lead during the second period, only to have Wichita storm back on a Jason Wilson goal 19:18 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

Kevin Baker had one goal and two assists to lead the Sundogs. Baker scored on the power play 10:17 into the second period to make the score Arizona. Arizona had taken the advantage when the Thunder's Jon Booras got sent off for hooking. Paul McIlveen assisted on the tally.

The the Sundogs penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 38 minutes in penalty time. Arizona had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Sundogs bested their season scoring average. Arizona has scored at the pace of 2.5 goals per game during the current campaign. The Sundogs relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Baker, Bryan Cameron and Michael Trebish took 16 of the team's 31 shots.

Others who scored for Arizona included Ian Schultz, Alex Tuckerman, and Brandon Coccimiglio, who each put in one. In addition, Arizona received assists from Travis Ouellette, Matt McCready, Brodie Zuk, Jordan Clendenning, and Andrew Engelage, who each chipped in one.

Wichita was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Thunder surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Wichita's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 18 shots on net during the game. By firing 36 shots on goal, the Thunder exceeded the 25.8 shots they average per game this year.

Wichita was helped by RG Flath, who racked up one goal. Flath scored 18:58 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Arizona. Mike Wilson picked up the assist. Wichita also had goals scored by Jesse Dudas and Ian Lowe, who scored one goal each. More assists for Wichita came via Matt Robinson, Matt Summers, Andrew Martens, and Jared Walker, who contributed one a piece.

Arizona's Engelage stopped 32 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Sundogs registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. For Arizona, Schultz was ejected from the game. The Thunder's starting goalie, David Brown, made 26 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Taylor Nelson, who stopped zero shots. Wichita registered two goals on seven power play opportunities.
