Wheatley hangs on, beats Wallaceburg 3-1Wheatley Area Arena Mon, Jan 20, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Wheatley Sharks beat the Wallaceburg Lakers, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout. A goal 3:56 into the the first period by Brett Bowman proved to be the game winner, and powered Wheatley to the victory Zach Wilson provided the assist.The Sharks were led by Scott Florence, who registered one goal and one assist. Florence scored on the power play 1:15 into the third period to make the score 2-0 Wheatley. Mike Reid picked up the assist. Wheatley managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Sharks finished below its season average of 14.0 penalty minutes per game. Thomas Virban also scored for Wheatley. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Tyler Liboiron, Austin Thompson, and Cale Phibbs, who contributed one a piece. Wallaceburg did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting 13 shots on net to force 12 saves. The Lakers were led by Scott Lubbers, who scored the team's only goal. Lubbers scored 7:32 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Wheatley. Justin Whitson assisted on the tally. Everitt Omstead recorded 12 saves for Wheatley. The Sharks registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Ben Vankessel made 26 saves for Wallaceburg on 29 shots. The Lakers incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
