Blenheim uses shootout to best Mooretown, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Blenheim Blades defeated the Mooretown Flags in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:34 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Blenheim forced Mooretown goalie Brandon Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots.

The Blades were led by Cam Aitken, who had two goals and one assist. Aitken scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 12:15 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Blenheim. Blenheim earned a power play opportunity when Spencer Bronzi was put in the box for high sticking. Ty Scratch picked up the assist. Aitken's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 4:56 left in the third period. Others who scored for Blenheim included Dylan Muzzatti and Justin Rossignol, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Blenheim were Drew Marlatt, who had two and Kirk McKillop and Jarrod Oliphant, who each chipped in one.

The Flags forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game Mooretown had been spending in the box.

The Flags were led by Sam Jasmin, who registered one goal and three assists. Jasmin scored 17:07 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Blenheim. Brett Thompson assisted on the tally. Mooretown additionally got points from Thompson, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Dan Lumley also scored for Mooretown. In addition, Mooretown received assists from Dan Hachey and Clay Williams, who contributed one a piece.

Eric Stewardson recorded 25 saves for the Blades. Blenheim totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-4 on the power play. For the Blades, Scratch was ejected from the game. Mooretown's Johnson stopped 42 shots out of the 46 that he faced. The Flags registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Mooretown ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Hayes was ejected from the game.
