Wheatley survives Essex comeback, wins 3-2

The Wheatley Sharks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Essex 73s on the way to a 3-2 win.

Wheatley took a 3-1 lead during the third period, only to have Essex storm back on a Daniel Slipchuck goal 18:15 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Sharks were sparked by Thomas Virban, who finished with one goal. Virban scored 6:26 into the third period to make the score Wheatley.

Wheatley capitalized on the 73s' penalties, netting two goals while skating with a man advantage.

Others who scored for Wheatley included Austin Fontaine and Scott Florence, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Jimmy Ciacelli, Austin Thompson, Cale Phibbs, and Jon Woelk, who contributed one a piece.

Essex's offense operated below it season average. The 73s put an average of 5.7 pucks into the net per game. Essex forced the Sharks goalie Conner MacKinnon to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Essex additionally got points from Alex Garon, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Essex received assists from Brett Clarke and Aaron Thibert, who each chipped in one.

Conner MacKinnon made 34 saves for Wheatley on 36 shots. The Sharks incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Jacob Kment recorded 20 saves for the 73s. Essex incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
