Amherstburg holds on for 5-4 win against Alvinston

The Alvinston Flyers tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Amherstburg Admirals would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

A goal by Blake Rutckyj put Amherstburg up 5-3 in the third period, but Alvinston pulled to within one on Karsten Berg's tally 9:55 into the third period.

Mark Sobocan and Rutckyj provided the spark for the Admirals, combining for three goals and one assist. Sobocan grabbed two goals and Rutckyj also added one goal and one assist.

Amherstburg forced the Flyers goalie Brett Avery to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. The Admirals could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Amherstburg also got points from Rutckyj, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Amherstburg included Colin Hamilton and Luke Gagnon, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Amherstburg were Cody Leeming, Kyle Morand, and Steven Spada, who contributed one a piece and Ryan Jones and Curtis Prymack, who each chipped in two.

Alvinston did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting 14 shots on net to force 10 saves.

The Flyers were led by Chad Rainsberry, who registered two goals. Rainsberry scored the first of his two goals at 8:57 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Alvinston. Zach VanEyk picked up the assist. Rainsberry's next tally made the score 3-1 Alvinston with 12:03 left in the second period. Alvinston also got a goal from Dan Warner as well. More assists for Alvinston came via Tyler Kettler, who had two and Clint Rose, Joe Archer, and Chad Vaneyk, who contributed one a piece.

Klinton Kenney made 10 saves for Amherstburg on 14 shots. The Admirals registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Alvinston's Avery stopped 31 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Flyers incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
