Wheatley vanquishes Blenheim in shootout, 6-5 (2-0 SO)Wheatley Area Arena Mon, Nov 11, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wheatley Sharks defeated the Blenheim Blades in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO). The two teams needed four turns to complete the shootout. In addition to the clincher, Wheatley got a shootout goal from Dylan Enns.The Sharks overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Wheatley trailed 5-4 after a goal by Blenheim's Mitch OHanley at 2:27 in the third period. The Sharks tied things up at 5-5 on a power play goal by Brett Babkirk at 6:40 in the third period. Wheatley's offense rang up 40 shots on the Blades' net. The Sharks took advantage of Blenheim's penalties, tallying three goals off of five power play opportunities. Wheatley was helped by Enns, who registered two goals. Enns scored the first of his two goals at 12:49 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Zsebok provided the assist. Enns' next tally made the score 4-4 with 41 seconds left in the second period. Scott Florence picked up the assist. Wheatley also got points from Babkirk, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Jimmy Ciacelli, who also had one goal and one assist, and Cale Phibbs, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Wheatley came via Mike Reid, who had two and Sebastian Kanally and Antonio Ciampa, who contributed one a piece. The Blades were led by Aaron Pastorius, who registered two goals. Pastorius scored the first of his two goals at 1:09 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Blenheim. Jordan Durston assisted on the tally. Pastorius' next tally made the score 4-3 Blenheim with 5:23 left in the second period. Durston picked up the assist. Blenheim additionally got points from Cam Aitken, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Blenheim also got a goal from Drew Marlatt as well. Other players who recorded assists for Blenheim were Jarrod Oliphant, Brayden Seliga, and Corbin Hagerman, who each chipped in one and Zack Horvath and Steven Funk, who contributed two a piece. The Sharks' Conner MacKinnon stopped 22 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Wheatley incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Justin Pratt made 34 saves for Blenheim on 39 shots. The Blades incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Blenheim ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kirk McKillop was ejected from the game.
