Wallaceburg holds on for 3-2 win against Blenheim

The Blenheim Blades tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Wallaceburg Lakers would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

Wallaceburg took a 3-1 lead during the second period, only to have Blenheim storm back on a Cam Aitken goal 8:52 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Lakers were led by Justin Whitson, who had one goal. Whitson scored 1:13 into the second period to make the score Wallaceburg. Frankie White picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:50 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Wallaceburg's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Blenheim power plays.

Lucais Meyskens also scored for Wallaceburg. More assists for Wallaceburg came via Jeff Morey, Ryan Gruszka, and Connor Johnston, who each chipped in one.

The Blades avoided man-down situations well, tallying one major for five minutes in penalty time. Blenheim ended up below its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blades could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Blenheim averages 4.8 goals per game. The Blades forced the Lakers goalie Joel Sowinski to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

Blenheim was helped by Zack Horvath, who racked up one goal. Horvath scored 11:41 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Wallaceburg. Corbin Hagerman assisted on the tally. In addition, Blenheim received assists from Kirk McKillop, Brayden Seliga, and Drew Marlatt, who contributed one a piece.

Joel Sowinski made 41 saves for Wallaceburg on 43 shots. The Lakers totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and had no power play opportunities. Wallaceburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and White was ejected from the game. Eric Stewardson rejected 16 shots on goal for the Blades. For Blenheim, Aitken was ejected from the game.
