Stouffville survives Orangeville comeback, wins 5-3Stouffville Arena Sun, Jan 26, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Stouffville Spirit came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Orangeville Flyers, but did just enough to escape with a 5-3 victory. Stouffville led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Spirit's Andres Kopstals's scored at 9:24 in the third period to put Stouffville up 5-2. The Spirit's penalty kill excelled, as Stouffville gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:10 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts. The Spirit forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Stouffville had been averaging 14.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Spirit kept Orangeville's goalie busy throughout the game, and Rob Kopytek made 41 saves on 46 shots. Stouffville was helped by Nick Thomakos, who registered one goal. Thomakos scored 5:45 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Stouffville. Daryl Thompson picked up the assist. Stouffville also got points from Michael Carcone, who also had one goal and two assists and Graham Pickard, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Matthew Heffernan, Michael Morgan, and Matthew Dunlop, who each chipped in one. The Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Orangeville had been spending in the box. The Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Spirit to score on any of their seven power plays. Orangeville was helped by Lucas Smilsky, who had one goal and two assists. Smilsky scored 12:35 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Connor Stack assisted on the tally. Orangeville additionally got points from Stack, who also registered one goal and two assists and Emmerson Small, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Devon Gillham also scored for Orangeville. Daniel Mannella made 20 saves for Stouffville on 23 shots. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Joseph Deveny was ejected from the game. For the Flyers, Peter Stepanis was ejected from the game.
