Mikowski's big game bests Pickering in 7-1 Buffalo win

Max Mikowski was all over the ice for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, as he tallied two goals and one assist in Buffalo's 7-1 win over the Pickering Panthers.

Mikowski found the back of the net 1:37 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Buffalo and again while on the power play 7:33 into the first to make the score 2-0 Buffalo.

The Jr. Sabres were led by goalie Joseph Pianta, who finished with 29 saves while allowing one goal. Pianta certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.3 entering the contest.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:46 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Buffalo forced Panthers' goalies to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots and forcing 29 saves. Steven Dombrosky made 10 stops and Greg Zupan made 19. The Jr. Sabres stifled Pickering's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Buffalo's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Jr. Sabres average 4.7 goals per contest.

Buffalo also got points from Josh Gabriel, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Nico Gonzalez, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Buffalo also got a goal from Darren McCormick as well. Other players who recorded assists for Buffalo were Wilson Vershay, Ryan Schmelzer, Ryan Kuhn, Dylan Howatt, and Jason Heerdt, who each chipped in one and Nolan Sheeran and Pat Egan, who contributed two a piece.

Buffalo totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. For the Jr. Sabres, Gonzalez was ejected from the game. The Panthers totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play. Pickering ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mark Tenuta was ejected from the game.
