Cobourg uses fast start to beat Wellington, 9-2

The Cobourg Cougars jumped out to a four-point advantage by the end of the first period and beat the Wellington Dukes, 9-2.

Mason Marchment was all over the ice for Cobourg, as he tallied four goals and two assists in the win. Marchment got on the scoresheet 2:23 into the second period. He then added goals at 4:08 into the second, at 14:04 into the second, and at 7:40 into the third.

Wellington fell victim to a deadly the Cougars power play, which ripped the Dukes for six goals.

Cobourg forced Dukes' goaltenders to work between the pipes, firing 48 shots and forcing 39 saves. Tyson Teichmann made 23 stops and Taylor Welsh made 16. The Cougars excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Cobourg's goal total was higher than its season average. The Cougars have scored at the pace of 3.3 goals per game during the current campaign.

Cobourg additionally got points from Conner Hogg, who also had one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Cobourg included Liam Grande, who had two and Nick Neal and Landon Schiller, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were TJ Melancon, Jake Emilio, Theo Lewis, Connor Armour, and Mitchell Gibson APJ, who each chipped in one and Alex D Oliveira, Ryan Logan, Kenzie Smith, and Taylor Gauld, who contributed two a piece.

Wellington racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 17 minutes in penalty time. The Dukes had been averaging 11.0 minutes in penalties per game. Cobourg was unable to stop Wellington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Dukes eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Wellington also had goals scored by Parker Wood and Josh Supryka, who scored one goal each. In addition, Wellington received assists from Luc Brown, Kyle Paat, and Alex Carnevale, who each chipped in one.

The Cougars' Nathan Perry stopped 34 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Cobourg incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Cougars ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Schiller was ejected from the game. For Wellington, Spencer Turcotte was ejected from the game.
