Morgan's hat trick boosts Stouffville over Pickering, 4-2

Stouffville Arena    Thu, Jan 09, 2014

A hat trick by Michael Morgan was the highlight in Spirit's 4-2 win against the Pickering Panthers.

Morgan notched his first tally 12:29 into the first period. He then added goals at 13:17 into the third and at 19:55 into the third.

The Stouffville Spirit managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Stouffville finished below its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Pickering was unable to stop the Spirit from sending pucks towards the net, and Stouffville eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.

Stouffville also got a goal from Graham Pickard as well. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Matthew Heffernan, Michael Carcone, and Matthew Dunlop, who contributed one a piece and Daryl Thompson and Joseph Deveny, who each chipped in two.

The Panthers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Spirit to score on any of their five power plays. Pickering's offense rang up 36 shots on Stouffville's net.

The Panthers were helped by Michael Walker, who had one goal. Walker scored 16:01 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Stouffville. Nicholas Lepone picked up the assist. Mason Evans also scored for Pickering. Other players who recorded assists for Pickering were Corey Helliwell and Mike Nedoszytko, who contributed one a piece.

Daniel Mannella recorded 34 saves for the Spirit. Pickering's Steven Dombrosky stopped 40 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The Panthers incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
