Early goals doom Newmarket, falls to yAurora, 7-2

The Newmarket Hurricanes fell behind early, and the yAurora Tigers kept piling on the points on the way to a 7-2 victory.

Calvin Higley was all over the ice for yAurora, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win. Higley scored on the power play 7:16 into the first period to make the score 2-0 yAurora. A hooking penalty on Adam Smith had put the Tigers on the power play. Taylor McCloy picked up the assist.

yAurora's penalty kill excelled, as the Tigers gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays.

yAurora forced Hurricanes' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, finishing with 40 shots and forcing 33 saves. Bo Bessette made 19 stops and Jophrey Gregoire made 14. The Tigers stifled Newmarket's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. yAurora surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Tigers average 4.1 goals per game. yAurora could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 32 minutes in penalties during the game.

yAurora additionally got points from McCloy, who also grabbed two goals and two assists, Dylan Sikura, who also registered one goal and two assists, and Kory Kennedy, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. yAurora also had goals scored by Arran MacDonald and Adam DiBrina, who scored one goal each. More assists for yAurora came via Michael Keenan, Alex Gilmour, and Tyler Boston, who contributed one a piece.

The Hurricanes were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 38 penalty minutes.

Others who scored for Newmarket included Kyle Stephan and Jonathan Colley, who each put in one. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Brandon Basler-APM and Jake Stirling, who each chipped in one.

Kevin Entmaa made 25 saves for the Tigers on 27 shots. yAurora registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
