Newmarket squeaks by Stouffville, 5-3

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Newmarket Hurricanes escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Stouffville Spirit.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jacob Piltzmaker's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Newmarket got the win thanks to a great game by Brandon Francisco, who had one goal and two assists. Francisco scored 13:26 into the second period to make the score 2-2.

In the losing effort, Stouffville was led by Joseph Deveny, who had two goals. Deveny scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:58 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stouffville. The Spirit had taken the advantage when the Hurricanes' Kyle Stephan got sent off for slashing. Matthew Heffernan assisted on the tally. Deveny's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Newmarket with 4:31 left in the third period. Heffernan provided the assist.

Newmarket could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game.

Newmarket additionally got points from Cameron Nicoll, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Justin Maiolino, who also registered one goal and one assist. Taylor Joseph also scored for Newmarket. More assists for Newmarket came via Trevor Petersen, who had two and Oshowy Jordan and Ian Farrell, who each chipped in one.

Stouffville could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game.

Stouffville also got a goal from Peyton Backus as well. Other players who recorded assists for Stouffville were Robert Powers, who had one and Chad Burrows, who had two.

The Hurricanes' starting goalie, Jophrey Gregoire, made 21 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Bo Bessette, who stopped zero shots. Newmarket registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Daniel Mannella recorded 21 saves for the Spirit. Stouffville registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
