Burlington beats Toronto 5-2 as Mueller gets hat trick

Steven Mueller netted a hat trick to lead the Burlington Cougars over the Toronto Junior Canadiens, 5-2.

Mueller notched his first tally 12:26 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:25 into the third and at 19:05 into the third.

Toronto's power play was ineffective against Burlington's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:18 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Cougars racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Burlington had been averaging 24.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Junior Canadiens were unable to stop the Cougars from sending pucks towards the net, and Burlington eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

Burlington additionally got points from Riley Dunda, who also had one goal and two assists. Ryan Wilkinson also scored for Burlington. More assists for Burlington came via Daniel Campbell, who had two, Tyler Lepore, who had three, and Jordan Brown and Derek Rotter, who each chipped in one.

Toronto forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the Junior Canadiens had been spending in the box. Toronto's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Burlington power plays. The Junior Canadiens kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Devin Tappendan made 35 saves on 37 shots.

Toronto was helped by Daniel Volpe, who registered one goal. Volpe scored on the power play 9:11 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Burlington. The Junior Canadiens had taken the advantage when Burlington's Dunda got sent off for slashing. Daniel Harquail provided the assist. Toronto also got a goal from Aaron Spivak as well. In addition, Toronto received assists from Anthony Repaci, who had one.

For the Cougars, Paolo DeSousa was ejected from the game. Nathan Colitto rejected 38 shots on goal for Toronto. The Junior Canadiens ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kennedy Duguid was ejected from the game.
