Newmarket holds on for 9-7 win against Whitby

The Whitby Fury tried their best to erase a five-goal deficit, but the Newmarket Hurricanes would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 9-7.

A goal by Ryan Kruss put Newmarket up 8-3 in the third period, but Whitby pulled to within two on Mitch Emerson's tally 19:02 into the third period.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 3:49 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Hurricanes were often in penalty trouble, totaling five minors and two majors for 20 minutes in penalty time. Newmarket had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hurricanes found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Newmarket averages 4.0 goals per game.

The Hurricanes were led by Trevor Petersen, who racked up three goals and two assists. Newmarket additionally got points from Oshowy Jordan, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Kyle Stephan, who also registered one goal and two assists, Taylor Joseph, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Justin Maiolino, who also had two goals and two assists, and Kruss, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Ian Farrell, who had one, Christian Dedonato, who had two, and Cameron Nicoll, who had four.

The the Fury penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. Whitby surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Fury forced Newmarket goalie Bo Bessette to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Whitby outdid its season average for goals scored. The Fury have scored at the pace of 4.1 goals per game during the current campaign.

Whitby also got points from Henry Thompson, who also registered one goal and one assist, Jeff Murray, who also finished with two goals and two assists, and Sean Deroch, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Adam Clements also scored for Whitby. More assists for Whitby came via Greg Milner, who had two and Connor Hale, Jonathan OHara, and Jeremy Wu, who each chipped in one.

Bessette rejected 33 shots on goal for the Hurricanes. Newmarket registered four goals on eight power play opportunities. The Hurricanes ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jacob Piltzmaker was ejected from the game. Boyd Diclemente took the loss and made 14 saves before being replaced by Tyler Feaver who made six saves. Whitby registered two goals on four power play opportunities. For the Fury, Keegan Cairns was ejected from the game.
