Milton uses early goal to top Orangeville, 4-2

The Milton Icehawks beat the Orangeville Flyers, 4-2, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Milton took over the lead for good with a goal by Cooper Richards at 6:24 in the first period. Ryan Burns picked up the assist.

The Icehawks' penalty kill excelled, as Milton gave up zero goals despite allowing 11 power plays.

The Icehawks were paced by Alex Riche, who had one goal. Riche scored on the power play 13:47 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Milton. A tripping penalty on Devon Gillham had put Milton on the power play. Kane Elliot assisted on the tally.

The Icehawks stifled Orangeville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Milton kept the Flyers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Taylor Welsh made 35 saves on 39 shots. The Icehawks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 28 penalty minutes.

Milton additionally got points from TJ Fergus, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Richards, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Burns, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Milton came via Tyler Burns, Jake Baird, Jeremy Gottzmann, and Josh Pace, who each chipped in one.

Orangeville was helped by Lucas Smilsky, who had one goal. Smilsky scored 6:32 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Milton. Keegan Ackerland picked up the assist. Orangeville also got a goal from Brandon Gaudette as well. In addition, Orangeville received assists from Colin Rigney and Ian Nichols, who contributed one a piece.

Ben Blacker recorded 28 saves for Milton. The Icehawks registered one goal on four power play opportunities. The Flyers incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Orangeville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Connor Stack was ejected from the game.
