Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Whitby Fury defeated the Cobourg Cougars in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams.Whitby overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Fury fell behind 5-3 after a goal by Cobourg's Jake Emilio at 28 seconds in the third period. Whitby tied things up at 5-5 on a power play goal by Adam Clements at 13:00 in the third period. The Fury forced the Cougars goalie Mathieu Ouellet to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. Whitby surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Fury average 3.8 goals per game. Whitby got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. The Fury were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 44 penalty minutes. Whitby also got points from Ryan Kirkup, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Jeff Murray, who also had one goal and one assist, and Greg Milner, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jonathan OHara also scored for Whitby. More assists for Whitby came via Connor Hale, Carter Landry, and Marco Azzano, who each chipped in one. Cobourg has scored at the pace of 2.7 goals per game during the current campaign. The Cougars had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances. Cobourg's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals. The Cougars could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 32 minutes in penalties during the game. Cobourg was led by Alex D Oliveira, who registered one goal and four assists. D Oliveira scored 16:42 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Taylor Gauld assisted on the tally. Cobourg additionally got points from Emilio, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Gauld, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Cobourg also got a goal from TJ Melancon as well.
