Aird nets hat trick, leads Burlington to 6-3 win over Orangeville

The Orangeville Flyers could not stop the Burlington Cougars' Neil Aird, who tallied a hat trick in a 6-3 win.

Aird got on the scoresheet 3:20 into the first period. He then added goals at 8:00 into the first and at 15:32 into the second.

Burlington put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Orangeville to score on any of its three power plays. The Cougars forced the Flyers goalie Taylor Welsh to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. Burlington bested its season scoring average. This season, the Cougars average 3.1 goals per contest. Burlington could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 27 minutes in penalties during the game. The Cougars' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Burlington also got points from Nathan Tandan, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Burlington also got a goal from Carl Greco as well. More assists for Burlington came via Daniel Campbell, who had two and Curtis Colbary, Jordan Brown, Steven Mueller, Ryan Wilkinson, Adam Burnett, and Tyler Lepore, who contributed one a piece.

Orangeville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 63 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Burlington was unable to stop Orangeville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 37 shots on goal. Orangeville's penalty kill managed to stymie the Cougars' power play, giving up only one goal while playing with a man down.

The Flyers were helped by Thanvir Bandesha, who finished with one goal. Bandesha scored 5:40 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Burlington. Lucas Smilsky assisted on the tally. Orangeville additionally got points from Keegan Ackerland, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Angelpooulos Peter also scored for Orangeville. In addition, Orangeville received assists from Mathew Thompson and Nick Connell, who each chipped in one.

Devin Tappendan rejected 34 shots on goal for Burlington. For the Cougars, Kyle Kokotailo was ejected from the game. Welsh recorded 39 saves for Orangeville. The Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jake Derkach was ejected from the game.
