Hamilton beats Newmarket 3-2 after comeback scare

The Hamilton Red Wings survived a determined comeback attempt by the Newmarket Hurricanes on the way to a 3-2 win.

Hamilton made the score 3-1 on a goal by Alex Zaccaria at 3:18 in the third period, and Newmarket got as close as 3-2 when Cameron Nicoll scored 19:37 into the third period.

The Red Wings were led by Zaccaria, who had one goal.

Hamilton's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Newmarket power plays.

Hamilton additionally got points from Luke Sinclair, who also registered one goal and one assist. Corey Caruso also scored for Hamilton. Other players who recorded assists for Hamilton were Josh LaFrance, who had two and Connor Bramwell, Mitch Reid, and Chance MacDonald, who each chipped in one.

The Hurricanes forced the Red Wings goalie Corey Foster to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots.

Newmarket was helped by Taylor Joseph, who tallied one goal. Joseph scored 9:44 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Nik Coric picked up the assist. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Kyle Stephan, Brycin Morrison, and Justin Maiolino, who contributed one a piece.

Hamilton's Foster stopped 38 shots out of the 40 that he faced. The Red Wings incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Hamilton ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Garnet Batrynchok was ejected from the game. Bo Bessette recorded 20 saves for the Hurricanes. Newmarket incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
