Leader's big game bests Newmarket in 5-2 North York win

Behind a great game by Alex Leader, who had two goals and one assist, the North York Rangers defeated the Newmarket Hurricanes, 5-2.

Leader's tallies came at 12:43 into the first period to make the score 2-0 North York and 10:23 into the second to make the score 3-1 North York.

North York's penalty kill excelled, as the Rangers gave up one goal despite allowing 10 power plays.

North York's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in four goals. The Rangers were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 28 penalty minutes.

North York additionally got points from Patrick Piacentini, who also grabbed two goals and one assist and Corey Kalk, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for North York were John Carpino, who had three and Valadao Adam, Anthony Latina, and Liam Kerins, who each chipped in one.

Newmarket's offense rang up 31 shots on North York's net.

The Hurricanes were helped by Ian Farrell, who had one goal. Farrell scored on the power play 1:58 into the third period to make the score 3-2 North York. Newmarket had gotten the advantage when the Rangers' Fung Zachary was sent off for tripping. Brandon Francisco assisted on the tally. Newmarket also got points from Justin Maiolino, who also had one goal and one assist.

Gianluca Baggetta recorded 29 saves for North York. The Rangers registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Jophrey Gregoire made 20 saves for the Hurricanes on 24 shots. Newmarket incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
