Wellington vanquishes Cobourg in shootout, 4-3 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wellington Dukes defeated the Cobourg Cougars in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. Cobourg's shootout goal was scored by TJ Melancon. Wellington's other shootout goal was scored by Erick Delaurentis.

The Dukes overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Wellington was down 2-0 after a power play goal by the Cougars' Stuart King at 5:53 in the first period. The Dukes tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Delaurentis at 9:39 in the third period.

Wellington was led by goalie Lucas Machalski, who finished with 26 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Machalski will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.99.

The Dukes forced Cobourg goalie Nathan Perry to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Wellington was helped by Trevor Cope, who racked up one goal and two assists. Cope scored 11:49 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Cobourg. Delaurentis picked up the assist. Wellington also got points from Delaurentis, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Wellington also got a goal from Mike Soucier as well. In addition, Wellington received assists from Steven Deeg, who had three.

The Cougars' offense rang up 31 shots on the Dukes' net.

Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Rylee McKinnon, Melancon, Alex D Oliveira, Jake Emilio, Ryan OGrady, and Mason Marchment, who each chipped in one.

Wellington incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Perry recorded 32 saves for Cobourg. The Cougars totaled seven minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major and went 2-for-2 on the power play. Cobourg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kenzie Smith was ejected from the game.
