Kingston beats Stouffville 4-3 after comeback scare

The Stouffville Spirit tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Kingston Voyageurs would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

Kingston made the score 4-1 on a goal by Charles Dube at 13:14 in the second period, and Stouffville got as close as 4-3 when Peyton Backus scored 15:33 into the third period.

The Voyageurs were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Kingston had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Voyageurs' offense rang up 31 shots on the Spirit's net. Kingston capitalized on Stouffville's penalties, netting three goals while skating with a man advantage.

The Voyageurs were helped by Maxim Pitre, who registered three goals. In addition, Kingston received assists from Alex Tonge, who had three and Adam Moodie, Patrick Volpe, Jarret Kup, and Brett Du Puy, who contributed one a piece.

The Spirit forced Kingston goalie Alex Brooks-Potts to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The defensemen of Stouffville were also effective in the Voyageurs' zone, and came away with two goals.

The Spirit were helped by Robert Powers, who tallied one goal. Powers scored on the power play 18:02 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Kingston. Stouffville had gotten the advantage when Kingston's Joey Rutkowski was sent off for fighting. Michael Stevens provided the assist. Matthew Heffernan also scored for Stouffville. Other players who recorded assists for Stouffville were Michael Morgan, who had two and Michael Carcone and Matthew Dunlop, who each chipped in one.

Brooks-Potts recorded 42 saves for the Voyageurs. For Kingston, Rutkowski was ejected from the game. The Spirit's Daniel Mannella stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Stouffville totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 3-for-8 on the power play. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Joseph Deveny was ejected from the game.
