Newmarket vanquishes St. Michaels in shootout, 6-5 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Newmarket Hurricanes defeated the St. Michaels Buzzers in a shootout 6-5 (3-2 SO).

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. St. Michaels' shootout goals were scored by David Italiano and Matt Alvaro. In addition to the clincher, Newmarket got shootout goals from Nik Coric and Thomas Beretta.

Brandon Francisco was all over the ice for the Hurricanes, as he tallied two goals in the win. Francisco found the back of the net 1:50 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket and again while on the power play 6:57 into the third to make the score 5-4 Newmarket.

Newmarket made Buzzers' netminders to work in net, ripping 44 shots and forcing 38 saves. Bo Bessette made 29 stops and George Argiropoulos made nine. The Hurricanes' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five St. Michaels power plays.

Newmarket additionally got points from Ryan Kruss, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Sam Hu also scored for Newmarket. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Trevor Petersen, who had two and Cameron Nicoll, Anthony Trujillo, Justin Maiolino, Ian Farrell, and Ferdinando Colella, who each chipped in one.

The Buzzers' offense rang up 42 shots on Newmarket's net. St. Michaels' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Buzzers give up 2.5 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

St. Michaels was helped by Joseph Berton, who racked up one goal and two assists. Berton scored 5:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Nick Iafrate picked up the assist. St. Michaels also got points from Alvaro, who also registered one goal and two assists. St. Michaels also got a goal from Jake Clements as well. In addition, St. Michaels received assists from Jake Evans, who had one and CJ Shugart, who had two.

The Hurricanes' Jake Danson stopped 37 shots out of the 42 that he faced. Newmarket incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. For the Hurricanes, Petersen was ejected from the game. The Buzzers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
