Newmarket falls to Oakville after surprising comeback

The Newmarket Hurricanes could not hold down the Oakville Blades, and Blades erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 5-4 win.

Oakville let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Blades took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Ryan Garvey at 15:09 in the first period. Oakville went down 4-2 after Newmarket's Cameron Nicoll put the puck home on the power play at 14:03 in the second period. After knotting things up at 4-4 on a goal by Scott Goodman at 3:55 in the third, the Blades got the game-winner from Garvey at 19:21 in the third period.

Oakville bested its season scoring average. This season, the Blades average 2.8 goals per contest. Oakville struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 40 penalty minutes for 10 opposing power plays.

Joe Seney also scored for Oakville. More assists for Oakville came via Christian Radjic - APM and Marcel Fatovic, who contributed one a piece and Kamil Tkaczuk and Ross Sloan, who each chipped in two.

The Hurricanes were helped by Taylor Joseph, who tallied two goals. Joseph scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:05 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Newmarket had taken the advantage when the Blades' Seney got sent off for elbowing. Nicoll assisted on the tally. Joseph's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Newmarket with 13:14 left in the second period. The Hurricanes had gotten the advantage when Oakville's Mark Bzowey was sent off for hooking. Nicoll provided the assist. Newmarket additionally got points from Nicoll, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Newmarket also got a goal from Trevor Petersen as well. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Nik Coric, who had two and Oshowy Jordan, Brandon Francisco, Ryan Kruss, and Ian Farrell, who contributed one a piece.

Evan Buitenhuis rejected 25 shots on goal for the Blades. Oakville registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For the Blades, Brandon Lukezic and Keigan Goetz were ejected from the contest. Jophrey Gregoire made 18 saves for Newmarket on 23 shots. The Hurricanes incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
