Kanata falls apart in second, loses to Ottawa, 8-1

The Ottawa Senators scored four goals in the second period to pull away from the Kanata Stallions and clinch an 8-1 win.

Joey Champigny was all over the ice for Ottawa, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Champigny scored the first of his two goals at 7:58 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Ottawa. Justin Charbonneau assisted on the tally. Champigny's next tally made the score 3-0 Ottawa with 11:36 left in the second period. Joe Shecter picked up the assist.

The Senators' penalty kill excelled, as Ottawa gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 4:30 into the third period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Senators forced Kanata's netminders to work all game long, finishing with 38 shots and forcing 30 saves. Cole Skinner made 26 stops and Drew Reinhardt made four. Ottawa stifled the Stallions' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Senators' goal total was higher than their season average. Ottawa averages 4.2 goals per game.

Ottawa also got points from Charbonneau, who also had one goal and one assist, Matthew Dupont, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Zac Tierney, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Luc Deschamps also scored for Ottawa. In addition, Ottawa received assists from Deric Boudreau, who had two and Alexandre Savard-Belanger, Robert Michel, Eric Clitsome, Jason Wilson, Michael Evelyn, and Hunter Racine, who contributed one each.

Kanata was held below its usual level of production. The Stallions put an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. Kanata's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to the Senators' power play unit.

Kanata also got a goal from Kasey Kulczycki as well. More assists for Kanata came via Kris Myllari and Alex Robinson, who each chipped in one.

Savard-Belanger rejected 22 shots on goal for Ottawa. The Senators ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. Ottawa ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Evelyn was ejected from the game. The Stallions ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For Kanata, Jean-Philippe Langlois was ejected from the game.
