Kanata hangs on, beats Pembroke 5-3

The Kanata Stallions beat the Pembroke Lumber Kings, 5-3, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Kanata took over the lead for good with a goal by Nic LaBurn at 12:49 in the first period. Connor Cobbold provided the assist.

With three goals and one assist between them, LaBurn and Braedan Moffatt teamed up to power the Stallions' offense. LaBurn finished with two goals and Moffatt also added one goal and one assist.

Kanata's penalty kill excelled, as the Stallions gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Kanata also got points from Moffatt, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Kanata included Trent Yule and Jeremy Carigan, who each put in one. More assists for Kanata came via Devin Fullum, who had one and David Higgs, who had two.

Pembroke forced Kanata goalie Cole Skinner to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

The Lumber Kings were led by Lucas Gonu, who had two goals. Gonu scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:32 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Kanata. A tripping penalty on Alex Stothart had put Pembroke on the power play. Felix Chamberland picked up the assist. Gonu's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Kanata with 2:17 left in the third period. Tye Felhaer assisted on the tally. Pembroke also got a goal from Sam Gleason as well. In addition, Pembroke received assists from Mark Petaccio and Keegan Harper, who contributed one a piece.

Cole Skinner made 40 saves for the Stallions on 43 shots. Kanata incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Sean Keating recorded 22 saves for the Lumber Kings. Pembroke incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
