The Kitchener Dutchmen took the lead against the Cambridge Winter Hawks in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 3-2 victory. John Divo provided Kitchener with the game-winning tally when he scored 18:29 into the the first period. Keegan Calder picked up the assist.The win gave the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. Kitchener was led by Ryo Kobayashi, who had one goal. Kobayashi scored 3:53 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Kitchener. Eric Hammerl provided the assist. The Dutchmen's offense rang up 33 shots on Cambridge's net. Kitchener got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. Kitchener also got a goal from Clayton Greer as well. In addition, Kitchener received assists from Brett Clampitt and Keli Grant, who each chipped in one. The Winter Hawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Dutchmen to score on any of their six power plays. Cambridge forced Kitchener goalie Marc Williams to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. The Winter Hawks were helped by Brennon Pearce, who registered one goal. Pearce scored on the power play 10:08 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Kitchener. Cambridge had gotten the advantage when the Dutchmen's Tyler Hoffman was sent off for slashing. Andrew Coupland assisted on the tally. Kyle Locke also scored for Cambridge. More assists for Cambridge came via Todd Bannermon, who had one and Cody Gratton, who had two. Kitchener's Williams stopped 38 shots out of the 40 that he faced. The Dutchmen ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. Kitchener ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Hoffman was ejected from the game. Lucas Machalski made 30 saves for the Winter Hawks on 33 shots. Cambridge incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. |
